Motherhood: Saychelle + Zeke

I have been a commercial photographer for the past four years, and have had the opportunity to work with many amazing brands and businesses. It wasn't until I photographed a birth for the first time, that I knew it was a space I wanted to further explore. So much so, that I took some time to pursue a doula certification and clinical work. In the process, I have have seen and witnessed many amazing stories. Especially the unique moment in time when a new life is brought earthside, and when a woman gives birth to a newer, unmet version of herself.

Capturing that transformation is anything but subtle, and I knew then, if we live in a time when we have the opportunity to document all kinds of different moments, there is not a more transformative story than the one that unfolds between a mother and child.

Having since attended dozens of births, it is clear that due to hormone changes, medication, and just pure nerves, the transformation a person experiences during childbirth often happens on a subconscious level.

Having a birth story captured through photo and film, creates the opportunity for a mother to remember a moment that is often so sporadic, unpredictable, and unique in its unfolding, that make remembering the details surrounding it, impossible.

Where am I going with this?

The chaos does not end once the baby is earthside. Motherhood requires a level of presence that is just as easy to miss, if the moments are never made tangible through photography, video, or other mediums.

I met Saychelle around that time period, and have gotten to watch her story unfold as a mother, birth worker, and incredible voice and activist in the LGBTQ community. I was lucky to get to spend a Sunday morning photographing she and her son Zeke. His presence and their beautiful connection, reminded me of the opportunity there is to make art that freezes these moments in time.

I continue to be left in awe by story and those who trust me enough to capture theirs.
